Ayurvedic Method: Strengthen your Hair & Soul
Have you ever heard of Ayurvedic oil? Up until not too long ago, I hadn’t either. Due to the recent stay at home order, I’ve started to venture back down the YouTube Natural hair rabbit hole and I stumbled upon this gem. I had been looking for ways to strengthen my hair, minimize the breakage (I had recently been noticing), and continue the healthy growth of my hair; so this was the perfect place to start.
To touch on a little of the history behind the method: ayurveda knowledge has been rooted in Indian tradition for centuries. Ayurveda highly focuses on natural healing properties, and the word itself means “the science of life” in Sanskrit. Ayurveda is known to focus on the well being of the person, including the spiritual, physical, and psychological healing.
So let’s get to why this oil is so beneficial for your hair growth. And to do that we’ll work through the ingredients. Now honestly, some of the ingredients I had never heard of before; and, then there were other ingredients that I was familiar with, but not their benefits when it comes to hair.
Amla is also known as Indian gooseberry, is derived from a fruit that is native to India. Amla is known for its high content of vitamin C and high antioxidant strength. It strengthens your hair follicles.
Using Brahmi powder in hair care helps to strengthen the hair and repairs damaged hair follicles. This herb nourishes the hair and helps in preventing hair loss and promotes healthy, luxurious hair growth.
Bhringraj oil– This key ingredient comes with a unique quality to strengthen the roots of your hair. This herb helps impart colour to your hair, prevent split ends and curb hair fall.
Rosemary helps to improve both hair thickness and hair growth, thanks to its ability to improve cellular generation. Rosemary’s anti-inflammatory benefits allow it to soothe and even treat dry skin and dry scalp. Fenugreek seeds have a history in Ayurveda for being one of the most productive plants. These seeds contain protiens to nourish and strengthen hair to minimize loss. Rich in Vitamins: A, B1, & C, these seeds help to promote hair growth and strength, maintain hair’s natural proteins, fortifying the hair’s shine, strength, and thickness.
Rich in vitamin C and amino acids, hibiscus flowers are great to help combat hair loss by nourishing your hair, strengthening your roots, and keeping follicles lustrous and healthy.
What you’ll need:
½ cup olive oil
½ cup castor oil
½ cup argan oil
1 tbsp dried rosemary
1 tbsp fenugreek seeds
½ cup dried hibiscus flowers
1 tbsp Amla powder
1 tbsp Bramhi powder
1 ½ tbsp Bhringraj oil
3-5 drop essential oil (I chose lavender, tea tree & peppermint oils)
Mason Jar
Strainer
Bottle for storage
Any of the carrier oils (olive, castor, argan) can be swapped for another one of favorite oils, I just chose this selection because I already knew they worked well with my hair.
How to make it:
Combine the castor, argan, olive and Bhringraj oils in your mixing bowl.
Add the rosemary, fenugreek seeds, hibiscus flowers, Amla & Bramhi powder to the combination of oils and stir to mix well.
Transfer mixture to a mason jar, seal the lid and allow it to sit overnight. This really allows all the ingredients to fully sit and mix well with each other. You can allow the mixture to sit for longer but I wouldn’t let it sit longer than one week.
After 24 hours, add the essential oils to the Ayurvedic mixture and mix well. The addition of essential oils can help to provide the mixture with a nice scent, but they can also be chosen to provide some topical benefits. Peppermint is great for stimulating the scalp to hair growth. Lavender helps for calming and soothing the scalp. You can also use rosemary oil which can provide additional antioxidant benefits and treatment for dry scalp. Tea tree oil helps to improve the health of the scalp and stimulate blood flow, which promotes healthy hair growth.
Next, use a strainer to separate the solid ingredients from the mixture. But make sure you don’t dispose of the extracted solid ingredients. Return the separated ingredients to the mason jar, where they can be reused for another batch.
Using a funnel, pour into a bottle for storage and use. I recommend something with a nozzle tip for easy application to the scalp.
In terms of usage, I massage my Ayurvedic oil twice a week before bed. I’ve been using this oil method for about a month now, and I feel like I’m starting to see some improvement. Few oils were found at my local grocery store. All other items can be found on my amazon store here. I can’t wait to see and share any results as I keep consistent with my use!
